As we grapple with loss in a world ravaged by COVID 19 it is easy to focus on the immediate need and feel that the future is to be a remnant of that which survives. To date, during the course of the pandemic we have all lost. Some of us have found unexpected gifts of connection and community. Others cultivate new talents. And some have found avenues to exploit others and advance their own interests. Every facet of human nature is being expressed. The spectrum of division to unity has never been so transparent.
What remains true, is that beneath our thoughts and actions, lies a unifying truth.
We are all human; capable of inspired action, love, and transformation.
How can we choose to create a world, that we would enjoy living in, and be proud to leave behind ? The place to begin is right here in the present moment.
Who are we ? What skills do we possess ? What did we hope to achieve in life ?
Yes....Our world has changed. Accepting this reality is the most difficult.
However, once we truly embrace the present moment just as it is ...a certain magic begins.
We realise, not every place is filled with doom and gloom. Some countries are starting to thrive. Some people are finding meaning, peace, and happiness. What do these nations, communities, and individuals have to share with us that may allow us all to pave a way to a better future ?
Those that succeed do not do so by accident... I have followed the global story very closely... and made observations. I then tried to create a blue print that could help us all.
Those who succeed begin by taking a few steps back.... to observe and understand the challenge. Then they connect with an intelligence that has alignment between the heart and mind.
Once this is established they ask the right questions and act with honour and integrity.
1. How can our choices honour all life ?
2. What is the best solution with a long term vision of growth in mind?
3. What choices in the past worked, which ones failed ? What creative new solutions can we make ? Let us blend these together to choose the best options.
4. What is the hierarchy of complexity in the proposed solutions ? Can we do simple things well and find lasting solutions ? Let us begin with the simple and work our way up the ladder.
5. What is our vision of the future ?
6. Can we build a bridge to cross the gap?
7. Can we be flexible and agile - to review our results and change strategy when things are not working ?
When we explore this question with an open mind we realise that there is wisdom from the past that can help us make choices which support the greater good of society. We realise that we are not separate from the environment we live in. We understand that nature is truly abundant. And if respected and treated well can provide us a wonderful place to live.
We are the people. We create culture, systems, and nations. We are unique and diverse in our talents. What frame work may we use to uncover our greatest contribution during these unprecedented times.
1. Who am I ?
2. What is my talent ?
3. What is the need ?
4. How can I serve and be nourished ?
5. Can I forgive and let go the past; to give myself the gift of the present and future ?
This is seemingly a simple set of five questions. However, to have answers that our meaningful and of value requires reflection, knowledge, and skills to unleash human potential.
It is possible. Let us unite, explore, and create our world together.
One of the most unique experiences I have had to date was a conversation with a sixteen year old. She approached me to create meditation tracks for her youth leadership program.
I was stunned by her insight, focus, and community spirit. It was uplifting to see the enlightened mind set of the younger generation in the face of loss. It fuelled my own enthusiasm to serve. There is much to be learnt from the youth of today.
I share my experiences of community work, often, with one of my wonderful mentors at UCH/UCL. She reminded me that no one need wait; opportunity lies in this moment. Her encouragement and support made a massive difference to me. Such is the priceless nature of wise mentorship. Never underestimate the impact of listening and encouragement.
With heart centred intelligence, we can all contribute in meaningful ways to shape the future. What will we do today ?
To give our future; a gift we can be proud of.
